GMAT - Verbal Sample Questions

Question #5

5a. Explain why the following sentence might be considered incorrect and rewrite the sentence so it is correct: My son play computer game all the time.

5b. This sentence is incorrect because the subject of the sentence "son" and the verb of the sentence "play" do not agree in number. In other words, the verb "play" is a plural verb while the subject "son" is actually describing a single person performing the action. Usually, the simplest way of fixing this problem would be to simply change the verb to a singular verb such as "plays", but in this particular example, this will not actually fix the problem entirely. This is because there is actually another problem with the sentence, which is the sentence does not make it clear whether the parent is talking about a specific computer game or all computer games in general. As a result, the correct sentence would also have to include a word that makes it apparent that the individual is talking about one game or more than one game so the correct sentence would be "My son plays computer games all the time" or "My son plays that computer game all the time."
