GMAT - Quantitative Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #9

9a. Examine the following statements and determine whether one statement, both statements, or neither statement is required in order to answer the question:

Is the value of x = 9?

  1. x -3 = y + 4
  2. y = 6 / 3

9b. Both of these statements are required in order to determine the value of x in this particular example. The first statement identifies that x - 3 = y + 4 so we know that x must be equal to y + 3 + 4. However, the first statement does not provide the value of y so there is no way to determine the exact value of x. However, the second statement provides the value of y as y is equal to 6 divided by 3 so y must be equal to 2. As a result, by using both statements, it is possible to determine that x - 3 = 2 + 4 so x must equal 2 + 4 + 3 and therefore x is equal to 9.
