GMAT - Quantitative Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #8

8a. Examine the following statements and determine whether one statement, both statements, or neither statement is required in order to answer the question:

Is Figure A a square?
  1. Figure A is a parallelogram.
  2. All four sides of Figure A are 3 inches long and Figure A has at least one right angle.

8b. In order to determine whether Figure A is a square or not, the only information that is required is the information provided in statement 2. Statement 1 provides information that may seem relevant as a square is a type of parallelogram, but it does not actually confirm that the figure is a square as rectangles and rhombuses are also parallelograms so the figure could be a rectangle or a rhombus without being a square. However, the information in statement 2 confirms that all four sides of the figure are 3 inches long and the figure has at least one right angle. If all four sides are the same length and at least one angle is a 90 degree angle, then all four angles must be 90 degrees. As a result, if all four sides are the same length and all four angles are 90 degrees, the figure would have to be a square.
