GMAT - Quantitative Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #7

7a. Solve the following function: F(x) = 5x + 6x - 11x; x = 5 and explain how you arrived at that answer.

7b. The solution to this particular problem is that F(5) = 0. This particular problem may appear to be rather complicated, but it is actually very simple. If x is equal to 5 and F(x) = 5x + 6x - 11x, then the solution to this problem can be determined simply by plugging in the value of 5 in place of each x in the equation. This means that the solution for this problem can be determined by solving the equation F(5) = 5 * 5 + 6 * 5 - 11 * 5, which can be simplified to F(5) = 25 + 30 - 55 or F(5) = 55 - 55. Therefore, the solution to this particular problem is that F(5), or in other words if the value 5 if plugged into the function of F(x), equals 0.
