GMAT - Quantitative Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #5

5a. Solve for x in the following equation: x + 3 = 6 - 1 and explain how you arrived at that answer.

5b. The variable x in this particular equation is equal to 2. The best way to determine the value of x for this equation is by isolating x, which can be done by moving the "3" to the other side of the equation by subtracting 3 from 6 - 1. Since 6 - 1 = 5, we get x + 3 = 5. Subtracting 3 from both sides of the equation gives x + 3 - 3 = 5 - 3 which reduces to x = 2.
