GMAT - Quantitative Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #2

2a. Briefly explain how to determine the area of the following figures and identify the area for each figure:

  1. A square where each side is 3 inches long.
  2. A rectangle with a length of 5 inches and a height of 8 inches.

2b.

  1. The area of a square can be determined using the formula A = s2. This means that the area of a square is equal to the length of one side of the square squared, or in other words, multiplied by itself. Therefore, the area of this square would be equal to 3 * 3 or 9 square inches.
  2. The area of a rectangle can be determined using the formula A = b * h. This means that the area of a rectangle is equal to the length of the base of the rectangle multiplied by the height of the rectangle. Therefore, the area of this rectangle would be equal to 5 * 8 or 40 square inches.
