1a. Briefly explain how to determine the area of the following figures and identify the area for each figure:

  1. A circle with a diameter of 12 inches
  2. A triangle with a base length of 3 inches and a height of 6 inches.

1b.

  1. The area of a circle can be determined by using the formula A = pi * r2. This means that the area of a circle is equal to the radius of the circle squared multiplied by pi, which is usually rounded to 3.14 when determining the area of a circle. In order to determine the area of this particular circle, since this example presents us with the diameter rather than the radius, the diameter must be divided by 2 to give us the radius. Therefore, the area of this circle is equal to 62 * 3.14 or 113.04 square inches.
  2. The area of a triangle can be determined using the formula A = b * h/2. This means that the area of a triangle is equal to the length of the base of the triangle multiplied by half the height. Therefore, the area of this triangle would be 9 square inches.
