GMAT Verbal Section

The GMAT consists of three primary sections that are designed to evaluate an individual's basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills. These sections include a verbal section, a quantitative reasoning section, and an analytical writing section. The verbal section of the exam is designed to assess an individual's basic reading skills and evaluate the individual's knowledge of basic concepts related to the English language. This section consists of 41 multiple choice questions that are designed to test the individual's critical reasoning skills, reading comprehension skills, and the individual's ability to correct grammar and sentence structure errors. The critical reasoning questions found within this section of the exam will present the individual with an argument or plan of action that the individual must analyze and use to draw conclusions, find flaws or merits in the particular argument or plan, and/or decide which argument or plan is more logical. For the reading comprehension questions found within this section of the exam, the individual will be presented with a series of written passages related to a wide range of different topics from a variety of different academic fields. Each of the reading comprehension questions relate specifically to one of these passages and examine the individual's understanding of the passage, the individual's ability to apply the information found in the passage, and/or the individual's ability to relate key concepts of the passage. The grammar and sentence structure questions found within this section of the exam will present the individual with a sentence that the individual must choose the choice that would make the sentence grammatically correct and improve the sentence's structure. The exam-taker will have 75 minutes to complete the verbal section of the exam.
